Voter Registration

Educators Voter Registration Initiative

The Texas Election Code requires high school principals, or their designees, to distribute voter registration applications to eligible students at least twice a year. Just distributing forms, however, does not guarantee students will become properly registered. That’s where we can help!

Educators Voter Registration Initiative (EVRI) was founded in 2014, operated predominantly by retired educators who wanted to help high school principals meet their legal requirement to provide voter registration opportunities on their campus. Since the fall of 2014, EVRI has been helping schools across Bexar County and has registered more than 20,000 new voters.

In June 2024, Youth Do Vote and Educators Voter Registration Initiative (EVRI) merged to combine efforts focused on high school students. EVRI is now a program of Youth Do Vote and we are proud to work alongside dozens of committed volunteers with the common goal of helping high school students register to vote.

What is our process?

Our approach is strictly nonpartisan. We offer a 10-15 minute voter registration presentation in class to explain to students how to register to vote.

EVRI’s method

Registering to vote in Texas is complicated, and EVRI’s method ensures application forms are filled out correctly and submitted on time.

EVRI volunteers are certified Volunteer Deputy Registrars (VDR) and have been fully trained in EVRI’s methods.  They meet with seniors in their Government/Economics or English classrooms and walk them through the requirements to register, assisting them in filling out the forms accurately and completely. We encourage students to research candidates and issues that matter to them, so that they can be successful participants in our democratic system.

At the end of our presentation, students are given the receipt from the Texas voter registration application that provides proof they were registered to vote.
